Consular Officer Visits Bayan Ulgii
As part of the Consular Section's continuing efforts to inform the public about visa requirements for the United States, Consular Officer Chris Anderson traveled to Bayan Ulgii, Mongolia's western-most region, on September 29-October 1, 2009.
Bayan Ulgii, home to a large Kazakh population, is culturally and physically removed from Ulaanbaatar, and it is difficult for residents to apply for visas. To encourage qualified applicants, the Embassy has launched an aggressive outreach program, including speaking at schools and media outlets, and visiting key government offices.
The first stop on the visit was at the Teacher's college of Bayan Ulgii. Consul Anderson spoke to more than 400 students, highlighting the strong relationship between the United States and Mongolia, and reviewing U.S. support for Mongolia on a number of fronts. He also elaborated on visa application procedures and took many questions. Separately, he met with Access Micro scholarship students, English Language teachers, journalists, and local government and business officials, including the Deputy Governor of Bayan Ulgii and the chairman of the provincial Chamber of Commerce. At the Chamber's offices, Anderson spoke to 20 local business officials, describing requirements to obtain business visas.
