Fulbright Scholar Examines the Interface of Tibetan Medicine and Buddhism
Fulbright Scholar Ivette Vargas-O’Bryan visited Mongolia from October 1-7, 2009 to study the interface of Tibetan medicine and Buddhism. The main goals of her visit were to exchange of ideas about current research, explore resources for future scholarly research, and discuss possible partnerships regarding study abroad, internships, and faculty exchanges between educational institutions in Mongolia and her home institution, Austin College. The trip was quite productive in terms of sharing ideas; establishing contacts with faculty, administrators and/or religious teachers at universities, libraries, medical institutions, and monastic establishments; and envisioning several possible projects. She met with many experts in the field of religious studies and visited sites where are crucial to future research and collaboration with Mongolian academic and religious institutions. Some of these places included the American Center for Mongolian Studies, the National Library of Mongolia, the National University of Mongolia, the State Corporation for Traditional Medicine, Gandan Tegchinlen Monastery, Dashchoilin Monastery, and Zanbazar Museum of Fine Arts.
