”Let’s Talk about America” lecture series
Diversity Visa 2010
On October 29, 2009 the American Cultural and Information Center hosted a lecture by Chris Anderson, Vice Consul. He talked about the Diversity Visa Program 2010 and introduced the Work and Travel Program for students. He briefly explained both programs and gave application details for Diversity Visa 2010.
He said that there are several ways to go to USA. One of them is the Diversity Program commonly known as the Green Card Lottery. Every year 5000 people around the world “win” a green card. It’s free to register online. He also emphasized that it is okay to hire someone to translate the application, but paying others for registration is wrong. For example there are many advertisements in the newspapers and on the internet related to the green card registration. The Diversity program is completely free. The official website does not ask any credit card numbers or any payment to be done.
40 students and teachers attended the lecture. They were very curious about those programs and asked some questions from the Consul, including:
- Q: Is it possible to apply for “Work and Travel in the USA every year?
A: Yes it is possible. If you are not a senior student it is very possible to apply again and again. You should prove that you will come back.
- Q: What about safey when you are in the program “Work and travel in the USA”?
A: If the organization doesn’t help you when you are in the USA, you can call emergency call 911 and police even if you are a temporary worker.
The press also covered the presentation and interviewed Chris afterwards. This presentation was part of an outreach effort by the Consular Section to inform as many people as possible about the opportunity available through the Diversity Visa program.
