The American Cultural and Information Center

General Information

The American Cultural and Information Center in Ulaanbaatar is a small American style library. The Center is operated jointly by the U.S. Embassy and the Ulaanbaatar Public Library. The Center helps students, researchers, teachers and the general public learns more about the U.S. and it encourages mutual understanding between the United States and Mongolia. The Center offers different resources and information on American topics, provides free Internet access, an English language library and reference services.

Mission

The American Cultural and Information Center in Mongolia provides accurate and reliable information about the U.S., provide research and learning facilities, accommodates intellectual pursuits with quality resources for all academic levels, and introduces American values, culture and ideas to the general public.

Collections and Resources

  • Print collections of reference titles, works of fiction, business, social science, politics, education and culture

  • Magazines, journals and U.S. government reports and publications

  • Electronic journals from the U.S. Department of State, The Bureau of International Information Programs

  • Free internet access to resources at U.S. and international websites, non-U.S. government organizations, think tanks and academic institions

  • Access to multimedia: audio and video products such as CDs and DVDs for music and film collections, and CD-ROMs for reference information resources

  • Access to computers, printers, and copier, as well as facilities to send and receive documents electronically via e-mail or fax

If you need information about the U.S. government, society, international relationships, federal and state laws, regulations, homeland security, the military, economics, business and commerce, citizenship, human rights, democracy, values, culture and education, you can use the ACIC library books and internet services.

Services

“Let’s Talk About America” lecture series

Every Thursday at 4 PM U.S. Embassy officers or American citizens who are working in Mongolia give presentations about America. The participants receive information about the history, culture, art and nature of America and improve their language skills. (Please note that this program runs from September until the end of June every year)

Internet service

The American Culture and Information Center offers free internet service to the public. There are 6 high speed workstations connected to the internet for patrons to access a wide range of information. This internet service began in November 2004 and each year approximately 11.000 readers use the service.


DVC training and conferences

We organize digital conferences by internet. We successfully organized the “Let’s Talk About America” lecture with Khovd, Darhan-Uul Aimag and Mongolian University of Science and Technology. Also, U.S. and Mongolian high school students have been connected by DVC conference.

Movie Night

Movie night starts at 4 PM every Wednesday. We show American movies and documentaries on widescreen for our members. They can choose which movie to watch and discuss the movie with other members

Watching Videos

Visitors who are trying to increase their listening comprehension, have the possibility to watch about 370 video programs. Those videos include movies and documentaries about U.S. history, culture, art and society provided by U.S. State Department. Four televisions are available with headpieces to watch CDs, DVDs, or VSR. The U.S. State Department is adding new movies each year.

English Training and Seminars

Every Saturday at 3.00 PM former Peace Corps Volunteer Brian Offenther facilitates an English Speaking Class. A group of Mongolian students with intermediate English language level meet to discuss various topics and listen to VOA Special English News Broadcast.

Introductory Internet Training

We provide internet training for members.    The training is held every week for 3 hours. (Please note this program starts in September till the end of June every year)

Other activities for the public

The U.S. Embassy ACIC organizes American holidays, cultural events, and conferences every month, and welcomes anyone who is interested to participate. We are happy to cooperate with people, organizations, schools and institutions that are interested in knowing about American culture and history.

Membership

Anybody can visit and use the Center. The first time is free and possible without UB library membership ID.  If you want to come regularly or check out books, then you need a membership ID from the Ulaanbaatar Library.

The documents you need to bring to register in the Ulaanbaatar Library:

1. National Identification
2. Student / Work ID
3. Address certification
4. Registration fee 7000 MNT

English teachers from the countryside, foreign citizens, and volunteers have the right to use this center during certain times. You should bring your National Identification when you come to the Center. Our principle is to make information free to the public.

Announcement

Due to the H1N1 influenza outbreak, the Cabinet of Mongolia passed a resolution to declare a 14-day state of increased preparedness nationwide, and all cultural and public places including UB City Public Library will be closed to the public from November 5-19, 2009.  Therefore, the American Cultural and Information Center (American Corner) will also be closed during that time.
