Ambassador Minton Commemorates November 2005 Bush Visit at Luncheon with President Enkhbayar as Guest-of-honor

With President Enkhbayar as the guest-of-honor, Ambassador Mark C. Minton hosted a luncheon today to commemorate the anniversary of President Bush’s visit to Mongolia.  This occasion provided an opportune moment to reflect on the cooperation and friendship that characterize the U.S.-Mongolia relationship.  The past year highlighted new energy as we continued working together to promote economic prosperity in Mongolia and democracy and peace internationally.

One year ago, Americans saw their president experiencing Mongolia’s fascinating culture and hospitality on TV and in newspapers.  President Bush’s visit stimulated new interest in this faraway friend that calls America a “third neighbor.”   Major newspapers informed many Americans about Mongolia’s history, people, and tourist appeal.  Similarly, U.S. government officials followed the President in large numbers.

American involvement in Mongolia continued to broaden since President Bush’s visit.  The Peace Corps welcomed the largest training class in history in June.  The Mongolian and U.S. militaries co-sponsored major multinational peacekeeping exercises, including joint humanitarian projects, and have served together in Afghanistan and Iraq.  USAID programs continue to support economic growth and improved governance.  Mongolia is moving closer to an MCC compact agreement.  American companies are seeking ways to expand investment in Mongolia.  The Embassy has increased scholarship opportunities, support for English language education, and cultural preservation efforts.

At the luncheon, Ambassador Minton noted, “We can look back with pride and satisfaction on our deepening relationship.  The President’s visit a year ago underscored our commitment to Mongolia and its future.”
