Snow Storm Wheat Fund Donation

On June 2, the United States Embassy and the Mongolian Red Cross signed an agreement which will help provide assistance to Mongolians in three eastern aimags which were affected by a severe snowstorm on April 6-7.

Under the agreement, the Mongolian Red Cross will receive US$25,000 (29,868,140 Mongolian tugriks).  The Red Cross will use the money to provide assistance to 373 families affected by the storm.  Of these families, 200 will be in five soums in Sukhbaat aimag, 136 will be in five soums of Khentii aimag, and 37 will be in three soums in Dornogobi aimag.

The money for this donation to the Mongolian Red Cross comes from wheat donated to Mongolia under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's PL-480 program.  Under that program, surplus U.S. wheat is sold in Mongolia at market prices, and the proceeds used to benefit the Mongolian people.
